The Brass Babes: exotic, energetic female latin-pop music!!
The Brass Babes distinguish themselves by their unique set of instruments: trumpet, alto saxophone, baritone saxophone and percussion. Even more special is the fact that all of the horns are played by very pretty ladies. Raya Hadzhieva plays trumpet Sanne Landvreugd plays alto and soprano saxophone, Mechteld Bannier plays baritone saxophone. The only male member is Chris Colleye on percussion (so the ladies in the audience will also have something to look at, while listening to the energetic sounds of the Babes). Together the four musicians sound like a big latin-pop orchestra.
The brass ladies ran into each other in Amsterdam, though they come from very different backgrounds; Raya is from Bulgaria, Sanne’s roots are in Suriname, and Mechteld was born in Switzerland. Recently they met Chris, whose origin is Indonesian. He turned out to be the perfect replenishment to the ladies’ pop-latin style.
Roots and personal taste have influenced their choice of music. Their repertoire is hip, surprising, and easy to listen to. They play African Kwela and Caribbean songs combined with Pop music. As individual musicians, all four have earned their stripes in jazz, latin and pop.
